Absence makes the heart grow fonder

August 14, 2012 § 1 Comment

Well hello there! Long time no posts. But really, I have a good excuse. Summer – how I had missed your long sunny days, balmy nights and plenty of days at the beach! Except, this is Denmark. Days at the beach, even during summer, have ended up look more like this;

Than this;

Even so, we have managed to use the few good days we have had and have been traveling up and down the country, visiting family and even going for a day of shopping in Germany in the border town of Flensburg  (much cheaper there, lower taxes).

In between all the general merriment, I did manage to get one thing sewn. One measly little thing. Sigh. Thats another things summer has; a lack of motivation.

So here it is. Even though I only got one thing done, I’m glad it was this one. I love it! The colour is great for dressing up or down and the denim shoulders make a simple top look really cool. The fabric is a viscose rayon so it wrinkles like crazy but it’s cool and soft.

I used the BurdaStyle Handbook blouse for a base but I changed it quite a bit. The front is just the front panels without the split and I eliminated the yoke by using the straps. I used a facing instead of sewing a hem and my love for the ease of facings continues to grow.

For the back, I used more or less the same process for the front; took the back panels, lengthened them and didn’t bother with the yoke.

You might have noticed my mention of the BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook. Lovely mother and father got it sent for my birthday a few months ago (already!) along with the Fit for Real People book. I love them both and they are definitely going to get some use. I find the Burda book is less of a complete beginners guide but more of an advanced beginners way of beginning to manipulate patterns. I would never consider buying this for my little sister (who is just starting to sew) until she learns all the basics like sewing a zip or pocket. The instructions are clear to someone who knows what they are looking at but for her, they would be complete jibberish.

I’ll update you soon on the project I have been busy with over the summer, if not just to prove that I wasn’t completely lazy.

Til next time!
